Weather in Afghanistan

The best time to visit Afghanistan is during spring, from late March through May, when the landscape transforms dramatically. You'll find hillsides carpeted in wildflowers, rivers swollen with snowmelt, and temperatures that are pleasantly warm in the valleys while still refreshingly cool in the mountains. Cities like Kabul and Herat enjoy mild days ideal for exploring bazaars and historic sites, while the tulip fields of Badakhshan Province offer scenes of extraordinary natural beauty.

Autumn, from September through November, provides a second excellent window for travel. Visitors can experience the harvest season when pomegranates, grapes, and melons are at their peak, and the air takes on a crisp clarity that makes mountain views especially dramatic. Summer (June–August) can be extremely hot in lower elevations like Kandahar and Jalalabad, where temperatures exceed 40°C, while winter brings heavy snowfall to mountain passes and can make roads impassable. Avoiding the midsummer heat and winter mountain closures makes spring and autumn the most practical travel seasons.
