Australia's vast size and diverse climatic zones mean the best time to visit varies dramatically by region. For the tropical north — including Darwin, Kakadu, and the Kimberley — the dry season from May to October is by far the best time to visit, when rain is minimal and temperatures are manageable. The wet season (November–April) brings spectacular lightning storms and lush greenery but also floods, heat, and mosquitoes that can make travel challenging. For the Great Barrier Reef and Cairns, the dry season (May–October) offers the clearest water and most comfortable temperatures.

For southern cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth, spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) are generally the most pleasant times, with mild temperatures and lower humidity than summer. Summer (December–February) in these cities can be hot, with temperatures occasionally exceeding 40°C (104°F) during heatwaves. Melbourne is famously unpredictable year-round ("four seasons in one day" is a local saying). For skiing in the Snowy Mountains of Victoria and New South Wales, the season runs from June to September. Uluru and the Red Centre are best visited in the cooler months from April to September.
