Weather in British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands enjoys a reliably warm tropical climate year-round, with sea temperatures hovering around 26–28°C. The peak season for sailing and tourism runs from December through April, when the northeast trade winds blow steadily at 15–20 knots, creating ideal conditions for sailing and keeping humidity comfortable. This is also the driest period, with long sunny days and minimal rainfall. Expect the highest prices and most crowded anchorages during this window.

The shoulder months of May, June, and November offer an excellent compromise — fewer visitors, lower accommodation rates, and still good weather. Hurricane season officially runs from June through November, with the highest risk in August and September. The BVI suffered severely in September 2017 when Hurricane Irma made a near-direct hit as one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record, causing widespread destruction; the islands have largely recovered since. Travel insurance covering hurricane disruption is strongly recommended for visits from June to November.
