Weather in Burkina Faso

The best time to visit Burkina Faso is during the dry, cool season from November through February. During these months, temperatures are most manageable — typically between 20°C and 35°C — and the harmattan wind from the Sahara keeps humidity low. This window is ideal for visiting wildlife reserves like Nazinga Game Ranch, exploring the Sindou Peaks, and traveling overland between towns on laterite roads that would be impassable in the rains.

March through May brings increasing heat, with temperatures frequently exceeding 40°C in the north — challenging but still passable for short visits. The rainy season from June to October brings cooler temperatures and a dramatic green transformation of the landscape, but roads can become treacherous and malaria risk peaks significantly. If you aim to attend FESPACO (held in odd-numbered years, usually February–March) or the Mask Festival in Dédougou (also February–March in even years), plan well in advance as accommodation fills fast throughout Ouagadougou and surrounding areas.
