Weather in Burundi

The best time to visit Burundi is during the two dry seasons, which offer the most comfortable travel conditions. The longer dry season runs from June through September, when temperatures in the highlands hover between 18°C and 25°C and roads remain passable throughout the country. This is the ideal window for hiking in Kibira National Park, visiting crater lakes, and exploring the tea estates of the northern highlands.

A shorter dry season occurs from December through February, which is another good option though somewhat less reliable. The two rainy seasons — from March to May and from October to November — bring lush greenery and spectacular waterfalls but can make rural roads impassable and outdoor activities challenging. Lake Tanganyika's waters are swimmable year-round and most pleasant from May to October. If timing your visit for the spectacular ingoma drum performances, check with local cultural centers in Bujumbura and Gitega, as major ceremonies are often tied to national holidays and harvest festivals.
