Weather in Canada

Canada's vast geography means the best time to visit varies enormously by region and activity. For the Canadian Rockies and western mountain destinations, June through September offers the best conditions for hiking, wildlife watching, and scenic drives along the Icefields Parkway. July and August are peak summer months — parks are busy but the wildflower meadows are spectacular. September brings golden larch trees in the Rockies and far fewer crowds, making it many seasoned travelers' favorite month.

Winter transforms Canada into a world-class snow sports destination: Whistler in British Columbia and the Laurentian Mountains near Montreal attract skiers from December through March. Quebec City's Winter Carnival in February is one of the world's great cold-weather festivals. For seeing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), head to the Yukon, Northwest Territories, or northern Manitoba from September through March; Whitehorse and Churchill are the most accessible aurora-watching bases. Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) offer beautiful foliage — particularly in Ontario and Quebec — and are ideal for city-focused travel when prices dip from peak season.
