Weather in Christmas Island

The most spectacular time to visit Christmas Island is between October and December, when the famous red land crab migration takes place. The exact timing varies each year based on rainfall and lunar cycles, but migrating crabs typically begin their journey from the rainforest to the coast in November, with the peak coastal spawning often occurring in December. This period draws wildlife enthusiasts from around the world and represents a once-in-a-lifetime natural event.

For diving and snorkeling, the dry season from July to October generally offers the best visibility and calmest seas. Whale shark sightings peak between November and April as the ocean conditions shift. The wet season from December to April brings occasional heavy rain and rough seas that can disrupt diving, but it also coincides with the crab migration excitement. Temperatures on Christmas Island are relatively stable year-round, hovering between 25°C and 30°C, making it a comfortable destination at any time of year, with the caveat that accommodation and flights are limited and must be booked months in advance during migration season.
