Weather in Cocos (Keeling) Islands

The best time to visit the Cocos (Keeling) Islands is during the dry season, which runs from approximately April to October. During these months, the trade winds provide a pleasant natural cooling effect, the seas are generally calmer, and underwater visibility for diving and snorkeling is at its finest. April through June is particularly favored by experienced travelers — the winds are steady enough for kitesurfing and windsurfing on the lagoon, and the diving conditions are excellent.

The wet season from November to March brings higher humidity, more frequent rain, and occasionally rough seas that can disrupt boat trips to Direction Island and outer reef dive sites. However, this period also sees warmer water temperatures, which can bring increased activity from manta rays and other pelagic species. Accommodation on the islands is extremely limited — there is only one main guesthouse option on West Island and limited home-stay options — so booking months in advance is essential regardless of when you plan to visit. The islands are a popular destination for kitesurfers, particularly from May to September when the trade winds are consistent.
