Weather in Costa Rica

Costa Rica has two distinct seasons: the dry season (verano) from December to April and the rainy season (invierno) from May to November. The dry season is generally considered the best time to visit the Pacific coast, the Central Valley, and popular destinations like Monteverde and the Nicoya Peninsula, as roads are more accessible, hikes are less muddy, and beach conditions are optimal. December through February is peak tourist season — expect crowds at popular parks and higher accommodation prices, so book well in advance.

However, the green season (rainy season) has significant advantages worth considering. Rainfall typically comes in afternoon and evening showers rather than all-day downpours, leaving mornings fresh and clear. The vegetation is at its most lush and vivid, waterfalls are at full spectacular flow, and wildlife activity — particularly amphibians, insects, and nesting birds — is at its peak. Prices drop considerably, crowds thin, and the country feels more authentic. The Caribbean coast has an inverse weather pattern — it receives more rain from July to October and is driest from February to April and September to October. For sea turtle nesting at Tortuguero, July through October is the prime season.
