About Croatia

Croatia has firmly established itself as one of Europe's most beloved travel destinations, and spending even a few days along its Dalmatian coast makes it abundantly clear why. The combination of crystalline Adriatic waters, a coastline studded with more than a thousand islands, medieval walled cities of extraordinary beauty, and a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle creates a travel experience that feels simultaneously ancient and utterly alive. From the Roman-era streets of Split to the baroque grandeur of Dubrovnik's old city rising from the sea like a golden crown, Croatia rewards every sense with architectural perfection set against natural splendor.

The Adriatic coast is the jewel of Croatian tourism, but the country offers remarkable diversity beyond the sea. The capital Zagreb, in the continental north, is a graceful Central European city of Habsburg architecture, vibrant café culture, excellent museums, and a sophisticated food and arts scene that many visitors never discover because they fly directly to the coast. Inland Istria — Croatia's northwestern peninsula — combines medieval hilltop towns, truffle forests, olive groves, and excellent wine in a setting reminiscent of Tuscany at a fraction of the price. The national parks of Plitvice Lakes and Krka, with their interconnected waterfalls and emerald lakes, are natural wonders that draw millions of visitors but somehow never lose their magical impact.

Croatia joined the European Union in 2013 and adopted the euro in 2023, bringing increased integration with Europe without diminishing the distinctly Croatian character that makes it special. The country's cuisine has evolved into a genuine culinary force, the wine regions of Dalmatia, Istria, and Slavonia produce world-class bottles, and the sailing and island-hopping culture along the coast represents one of the finest maritime leisure traditions in the Mediterranean. Croatia is a destination that works beautifully whether you stay for a week or a month — there is always another island, another hidden cove, or another walled city waiting to be found.

History & Background

Croatia's history is one of the most complex in Europe — a small nation that has been fought over, divided, and rebuilt by a remarkable succession of powers spanning three thousand years. The Illyrians and later the Greeks and Romans left their mark on the coast; Diocletian, one of Rome's greatest emperors, was born in Dalmatia and built his retirement palace on the shores of the Adriatic, around which the modern city of Split has grown organically over seventeen centuries. Medieval Croatia established its own kingdom in the 9th century and entered a union with Hungary in 1102, beginning a long period of complex political arrangements that saw Croatian nobles maintain significant autonomy while navigating the constant Ottoman threat from the east.

Venice controlled much of the Dalmatian coast for centuries, leaving behind the exquisite stone architecture that defines Dubrovnik, Split, and Šibenik. Habsburg Austria took control of most Croatian territory from the 17th century until World War I. The 20th century brought Yugoslavia — first a kingdom, then Tito's socialist federation — during which Croatian national identity was suppressed rather than celebrated. The declaration of independence in 1991 triggered a brutal war with Serbian forces that lasted until 1995, leaving deep scars that have slowly healed in the decades since. Croatia's accession to NATO in 2009 and the EU in 2013 marked its full integration into the European family of nations.

Culture & People

Croatian culture is shaped by its position at the intersection of Central Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Balkans — a crossroads location that has left the country with a rich, layered identity that is neither purely one nor the other. Croatians are deeply proud of their distinct language, heritage, and identity, which has been hard-won through centuries of foreign domination by Venice, the Ottoman Empire, Habsburg Austria, and more recently through the painful process of independence from Yugoslavia in the 1990s. This pride manifests as a strong sense of regional identity — a Dalmatian, a Zagrebčan, and an Istrian will each feel a distinct local loyalty alongside their Croatian national identity.

The necktie is a Croatian invention — the word "cravat" derives from the French for "Croat" — and this small historical fact delights Croatians enormously. Folk traditions remain alive and practiced, from the lace-making of Lepoglava (UNESCO Intangible Heritage) to the Moreška sword dance of Korčula Island. The klapa tradition — unaccompanied harmonious singing from Dalmatia, also UNESCO-recognized — can still be heard at festivals and in konoba restaurants along the coast. Croatian cinema, literature, and visual arts have an impressive international profile, and the country's famous contributions to science — including the work of Nikola Tesla, born in what is now Croatia — are a source of enormous national pride.

Food & Cuisine

Croatian cuisine divides naturally along the country's geographical fault lines — the coast and the interior represent almost entirely different culinary traditions united by shared quality and fresh ingredients. Along the Dalmatian and Istrian coast, the cooking is unambiguously Mediterranean: grilled fish and seafood prepared with devastating simplicity, fresh olive oil from ancient groves, sheep's cheese from island pastures, prosciutto (prsut) air-dried in the sea breezes, and the extraordinary black risotto (crni rižot) colored and flavored with cuttlefish ink. Octopus prepared under a peka — a traditional bell-shaped iron lid buried in embers — is a Dalmatian masterpiece worth seeking out.

Istria has emerged as Croatia's most sophisticated food region, driven by the presence of indigenous black and white truffles that appear in dishes from pasta to scrambled eggs throughout the season. Istrian wine — particularly the indigenous Malvazija white and Teran red — and olive oils are internationally award-winning. Continental Croatian cuisine draws from Central European traditions: hearty meat stews, schnitzel, paprika-spiced dishes from the Slavonian plains, and freshwater fish from the rivers and lakes of the interior. Štrukli — a Zagreb specialty of baked or boiled pastry stuffed with cottage cheese — is the kind of homely, satisfying dish that defines city comfort food, and Zagreb's café culture of elaborate cakes and excellent coffee is another pleasure entirely.

Top Attractions

  • Dubrovnik Old City — A UNESCO World Heritage medieval city of limestone streets, baroque churches, and the famous 2-kilometer city walls overlooking the Adriatic — one of Europe's most beautiful urban spaces.
  • Plitvice Lakes National Park — A UNESCO-listed cascade of 16 terraced turquoise lakes connected by hundreds of waterfalls, set in pristine beech and fir forest — Croatia's most visited natural wonder.
  • Diocletian's Palace, Split — A remarkable living Roman monument where a 4th-century imperial palace has been organically absorbed into a modern Mediterranean city — cafes, apartments, and restaurants occupy ancient stone chambers.
  • Hvar Island — The sunniest spot in Croatia, famous for its lavender fields, Venetian architecture, beautiful coves, and the most glamorous nightlife on the Adriatic.
  • Rovinj, Istria — A strikingly beautiful fishing town of Venetian-influenced architecture crowding a small peninsula, with one of Istria's best restaurant scenes and excellent nearby beaches.
  • Krka National Park — A series of spectacular waterfalls and pools along the Krka River, historically famous for the Skradinski buk falls, with boat tours and riverside walking trails through ancient mills.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Book accommodation in Dubrovnik, Hvar, and Split at least 3-6 months ahead for July and August — these destinations are among Europe's most popular and capacity is genuinely limited.
  • Croatia uses the euro — ATMs are widely available but inform your bank before travel to avoid card blocks.
  • Ferry and catamaran connections between islands are operated by Jadrolinija and other companies; check schedules carefully as services are more frequent in summer and limited in winter.
  • Dubrovnik has strict limits on cruise ship passengers and day-trippers to manage overcrowding — arrive early in the morning or after 5pm to experience the old city with far fewer crowds.
  • Hire a car to explore Istria and the Dalmatian hinterland — the coast's secondary roads and inland villages are largely inaccessible without your own transport.
  • Tip around 10% in restaurants; it is appreciated but not obligatory — round up to a convenient amount when paying by card.
  • Nudism (naturism) has a long and normalized tradition on Croatian islands — look for beaches or campsites marked FKK if interested, or simply be aware that some beaches have naturist sections.

Visa Overview

Croatia is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Citizens of EU and EEA countries can enter freely with a valid ID or passport. Citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, and many other countries can visit for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa, under the standard Schengen rules. Citizens of some nationalities require advance visas — consult the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the embassy in your country. As of 2024, EU citizens can travel with national ID cards, though a passport is always recommended for non-EU visitors.

Getting Around

Croatia has no functioning intercity passenger rail network worth using for most tourist routes — buses and ferries are the primary overland and island transport. FlixBus, Arriva, and local companies connect Zagreb with coastal cities like Split, Dubrovnik, and Zadar efficiently. Ferry connections along the coast and to the islands are operated by Jadrolinija; book car spaces on ferries in advance during summer as they fill quickly. Split and Dubrovnik airports receive direct flights from across Europe in summer. Within cities, walking is often the best option in historic old towns; taxis and ride-hailing apps (Bolt) are affordable for longer urban distances.

Safety Notes

Croatia is one of the safest destinations in southeastern Europe. Violent crime is extremely rare, and the country has a well-functioning police presence in tourist areas. Standard precautions against pickpocketing apply in crowded areas — particularly Dubrovnik's old city walls, Split's Riva promenade, and Zagreb's Dolac market. When swimming, be aware of sea urchins on rocky shorelines — water shoes are practical. Jellyfish can appear in the Adriatic from July to August. Mountain and island hiking requires proper footwear and sun protection; tell someone your route when hiking in more remote areas. The sea can be rough during the bura wind — check conditions before taking water taxis or kayaking.
