Weather in Denmark

Denmark's climate is temperate maritime — meaning mild rather than extreme, but never predictably sunny. The best time to visit is undoubtedly May through August, when temperatures range from 18°C to 25°C, daylight stretches until 10 pm in midsummer, and outdoor life explodes across the country's cities and coastlines. The summer solstice celebration of Sankt Hans Aften (Midsummer Eve, June 23) is a joyful national tradition featuring bonfires on beaches across the country. Copenhagen in June and July feels like a transformed city: outdoor restaurants pack every pavement, cycling lanes fill with commuters and tourists alike, and the harbor baths draw swimmers into clean urban water.

September and October offer a gentler, more atmospheric experience — harvest markets, autumn colors in beech forests, and the return of the hygge aesthetic as Danes light candles against the darkening evenings. Christmas in Denmark (December) is exceptionally atmospheric: Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens transforms into a winter wonderland with thousands of lights and traditional market stalls selling æbleskiver (apple pancakes) and warm gløgg (mulled wine). Winter (January–March) is cold, dark, and frequently grey, but museums, design galleries, and Copenhagen's restaurant scene offer ample indoor rewards for the resilient traveler.
