Weather in Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with the best conditions generally found between December and April — the dry season — when northeast trade winds moderate temperatures to a pleasant 25–30°C and humidity is lower. This coincides with peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and more crowded beaches, particularly around Christmas–New Year and February–March. January and February are the absolute prime months: perfect beach weather, whale watching season in Samaná (humpbacks arrive in their thousands from mid-January through March), and the festive atmosphere of the pre-Lenten Carnival celebrations.

The rainy season runs from May through November, with the heaviest rainfall in May–June and September–November. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30, with peak risk in August–October. Despite the risk, the rainy season brings lush green landscapes, lower hotel rates, and smaller crowds — many visitors find June and early July, before the worst hurricane risk period, excellent value. The north coast (Puerto Plata and Cabarete) and south coast (Barahona) each have subtly different weather patterns; Cabarete is famous as a world-class kiteboarding destination, with the best wind conditions from June through August.
