Weather in DR Congo

The DRC straddles the equator, giving it a complex climate regime that varies significantly by region. The Congo Basin receives rain throughout much of the year with two rainy seasons — roughly March through May and September through November — and two somewhat drier periods. The north experiences a different pattern from the south. For most visitors, the drier months of June through August (in the south) and December through February (in the north) offer more manageable conditions, though "dry" in the rainforest rarely means entirely rain-free.

For gorilla trekking in the Virunga region near Goma, the relatively drier months of June–September and December–February are preferred as forest trails are less muddy. The Nyiragongo lava lake can be visited year-round, but October–April sees more cloud and fog that can obscure views of the crater. Kinshasa is best visited during the drier season (June–September) when the heat is slightly moderated. Bear in mind that security conditions in eastern DRC can change rapidly — always consult the latest travel advisories from your government before planning any trip to the country, particularly to North and South Kivu provinces.
