Weather in Eritrea

The highland regions around Asmara are most pleasant from October to April, when temperatures are mild and skies are clear. The rainy season from June to September brings lush green landscapes to the highlands but can make dirt roads impassable. Asmara sits at about 2,300 meters above sea level, which keeps it pleasantly cool year-round — temperatures rarely exceed 28°C and nights can be surprisingly chilly, so pack a light jacket even in the dry season.

The Red Sea coast and Dahlak Archipelago are best visited between October and March, when sea conditions are calmest and underwater visibility is at its peak. The coast becomes extremely hot from May through August, with temperatures frequently exceeding 40°C in Massawa and the surrounding lowlands. If you wish to see Eritrea in its most festive atmosphere, plan your visit around the Orthodox Christmas celebrations in January or the Eid festivals, when communities come together in colorful displays of tradition.
