Ethiopia is where human history begins. Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations on earth, with a continuous historical record stretching back over three thousand years. The Kingdom of Aksum, centered in the northern highlands from around 100 to 940 CE, was a major ancient power that controlled trade routes between Rome, the Arabian Peninsula, and India, minting its own coins and erecting massive stone obelisks. It was among the first kingdoms in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion in the 4th century under King Ezana, a decision that shaped Ethiopian identity for seventeen centuries.

The medieval Zagwe dynasty built the extraordinary rock-hewn churches of Lalibela in the 12th century as a New Jerusalem when the original was inaccessible during the Crusades. The Solomonic dynasty then ruled for centuries, claiming direct descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba — a lineage that defined the mystique of Ethiopian kingship all the way to Emperor Haile Selassie, who ruled until 1974.
