Weather in Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands are at their best from October through March, which is the austral spring and summer. This is when wildlife activity is at its peak — penguins arrive from sea in October to set up nesting colonies, chicks hatch through December and January, and the air is full of albatrosses, striated caracaras, and upland geese. Temperatures during summer range from 5°C to 15°C, which sounds cold but combined with extended daylight hours of up to seventeen hours and clear skies can feel remarkably pleasant.

November and December are arguably the finest months, offering the spectacle of penguin pairs establishing territories and courtship behavior, plus the best chance of calm days for exploring the outer islands by boat. February and March see penguin chicks growing rapidly and sea lion pups on beaches before the main wildlife disperses for sea. Winter from April to September is genuinely harsh — cold, frequently stormy, and with limited daylight. Most visitor accommodation and tour operators operate only during the October-to-March season.
