Weather in French Guiana

French Guiana has a tropical climate with two distinct wet seasons and two dry seasons, and choosing the right time to visit depends greatly on your priorities. The long dry season from August to November is widely considered the best time for most travelers. Trails in the rainforest are more accessible, river levels are manageable for canoeing, and the humidity is relatively lower. Wildlife is also easier to spot near water sources during drier months, making jungle excursions especially rewarding.

If watching leatherback sea turtles nest is on your list — and it absolutely should be — plan your visit between April and July. These ancient creatures emerge from the Atlantic to lay eggs on Awala-Yalimapo beach, one of the most significant nesting sites in the world. The short dry season in February and March also offers a reasonable window for forest exploration. Avoid peak wet season months of May and June if you plan extensive trekking, as trails can become impassable and river crossings dangerous. However, the lush intensity of the jungle after heavy rains has its own dramatic beauty.
