Weather in French Southern and Antarctic Lands

The austral summer months of November through March represent the only feasible window for visiting the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, when pack ice recedes, seas are marginally calmer, and wildlife activity is at its peak. January and February are the warmest months, with temperatures on Kerguelen ranging from 0°C to 8°C (32°F–46°F). This is when king penguin chicks are most visible and elephant seals are breeding — spectacular wildlife encounters await the rare visitor.

Outside of summer, conditions deteriorate rapidly. The Roaring Forties and Furious Fifties deliver relentless storms, and sea crossings become extraordinarily dangerous even for research vessels. Winter — April through October — brings frequent blizzards, freezing temperatures, and near-total darkness in the Antarctic sector. Expedition cruises, when available, almost exclusively operate between November and February. There is no regular passenger service; access is only possible through authorized research missions or specially permitted expedition voyages.
