Weather in Ghana

The best time to visit Ghana falls between November and March, during the dry season across most of the country. Harmattan winds from the Sahara bring hazy skies during December and January, which can limit visibility for photography, but temperatures are cooler and humidity drops to manageable levels after the West African heat. This period coincides with major festivals and Christmas-New Year celebrations, when Ghanaians from the diaspora return home in huge numbers, filling the country with energy, music, and elaborate street parties.

April through June marks the main wet season in southern Ghana, when afternoon rain showers are frequent but brief and the landscape turns lush and brilliantly green. The far north has a different weather pattern — its dry season aligns broadly with the south's, but the north is dramatically hotter and drier. For wildlife viewing at Mole National Park in the north, the dry season (November to April) concentrates elephants and other animals near waterholes for exceptional sightings. Avoid traveling during the height of the secondary rainy season in September-October, when road conditions in rural areas can be challenging and some attractions close temporarily.
