Weather in Honduras

The dry season from November to April is the best time to visit most of Honduras, when highland roads are passable, outdoor activities are comfortable, and skies are clear for birding and wildlife watching. December through February offers the most pleasant temperatures in the western highlands around Copán and the interior valleys — days are warm and sunny while cool evenings make for excellent sleeping. The Bay Islands have their own microclimate: the north coast can be showery year-round, but the south shores of the main islands see relatively dry conditions from March through September.

The Caribbean coast and Bay Islands experience their driest and calmest weather from February through May and again briefly in September and October — the latter is known locally as the "little dry season." The main rainy season runs from June through November on the Caribbean coast, and hurricanes are a genuine risk from August through October, as Honduras has been devastated by major storms including Mitch in 1998. Diving visibility on the Mesoamerican Reef is generally best from March through May and in September, when calm seas, light winds, and strong light combine for optimal underwater conditions. Birdwatchers favor November through February when migratory species swell local populations.
