Weather in Iraq

The best time to visit Iraq is during spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November), when temperatures are mild and travel is most comfortable. Spring brings lush greenery to the countryside and snow-melt waterfalls to the Kurdistan highlands, making April an especially magical time to visit the north. Autumn offers golden light and cooling temperatures that make exploring archaeological sites pleasant. The Kurdistan Region can be visited almost year-round, with summer (June to August) in the mountains being refreshingly cool and popular with local tourists.

Summer in central and southern Iraq — including Baghdad, Basra, and the holy cities — is extremely hot, with temperatures frequently exceeding 45°C, making sightseeing challenging and potentially dangerous. Winter (December to February) is mild in central and southern regions but cold in Kurdistan, where mountain passes may be snow-covered. Religious events on the Islamic calendar, particularly Arbaeen — the world's largest annual human gathering, when millions walk to Karbala — create enormous logistical challenges but also offer a glimpse of extraordinary communal devotion that is deeply moving to witness.
