Weather in Maldives

The Maldives enjoys a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons, and timing your visit well makes a significant difference to your experience. The dry northeast monsoon season from November to April is the peak period for travel, delivering clear skies, calm seas, excellent underwater visibility, and the reliably sunny weather that the destination is famous for. December through February represents the absolute peak, when conditions are most consistent and prices are at their highest. Book well in advance if you are planning travel during the Christmas and New Year period.

The southwest monsoon from May to October brings higher humidity, more frequent rain, and choppier seas, particularly between June and August when storms can be significant. However, this season also brings excellent surfing conditions to the southern atolls, lower accommodation prices, and unique wildlife encounters — whale sharks aggregate in the northern atolls between May and November, and manta rays are frequently spotted in the channels around certain atolls from May through December. The shoulder months of May and October offer a reasonable compromise between manageable weather and value pricing. The Maldives is worth visiting year-round, but your experience will be shaped significantly by which season you choose.
