Weather in Mali

Mali's climate is dominated by a hot, arid north and a more temperate, seasonally wet south, and the best time to visit depends significantly on which part of the country you intend to explore. The cool dry season from November to February is universally considered the optimal period for travel. Temperatures are bearable across the entire country during these months — typically 25–35°C in the south and cooler nights in the desert regions — and roads are dry and passable. This is also the season when the Niger River is still high enough for pirogue boat journeys along the inland delta, making the Mopti region particularly rewarding.

The hot dry season from March to May sees temperatures climb dramatically, often exceeding 45°C in the Saharan north, making outdoor exploration genuinely punishing. The harmattan wind brings dusty haze that reduces visibility significantly. The rainy season from June to October brings cooling showers to the south, the greening of the savanna, and the magnificent spectacle of the Niger Inland Delta flooding to create the Baoule floodplain — an extraordinary birdwatching destination. However, roads become muddy and many rural tracks impassable during this period. For most travelers, November through February offers the most comfortable and logistically sound window for visiting Mali.
