Weather in Micronesia

The best time to visit Micronesia is during the dry season, which runs from approximately December through April across most of the island states. This period offers the finest diving and snorkeling conditions, with good visibility and calm seas especially around the wrecks of Chuuk Lagoon and the reefs of Kosrae. Yap experiences its driest and clearest weather from December to April, and this is also the best period for the famous manta ray encounters in Yap's channels, where large aggregations of mantas can be observed year-round but are most reliably sighted during specific tidal conditions. Advance booking of dive packages and liveaboards is highly recommended for peak season visits.

Micronesia's wet season, from May through November, brings higher rainfall and stronger winds but is not a barrier to travel for those who do not mind occasional showers. The islands rarely experience full-scale typhoons, though they are within the western Pacific typhoon belt and the August through October period carries some risk. Pohnpei is notably wet year-round — it is one of the rainiest places on earth, receiving up to 7,600 millimeters of rainfall annually — so there is truly no "dry season" for that island, though the December-April months are marginally drier. For Nan Madol exploration in Pohnpei, any time of year is suitable; the ruins are extraordinary regardless of weather.
