Weather in Mongolia

The best time to visit Mongolia is from late May through early September, when the steppe turns emerald green and temperatures are mild enough for outdoor adventure. July is particularly special, as the Naadam Festival — held around the 11th to 13th — draws visitors from across the globe for three days of sporting competitions, music, and celebration. The summer months bring long daylight hours, making it ideal for horseback trekking, camping in the countryside, and exploring national parks.

If you prefer fewer crowds and dramatic landscapes, consider visiting in September and early October, when the forests of the north blaze with autumn colour and the air turns crisp and clear. Winter travel — from November through February — is for the truly intrepid; temperatures plummet to minus 30°C or lower, but the White Steppe Naadam, held in February, and the Eagle Festival in western Mongolia (also held in October) offer extraordinary cultural experiences. Spring, from April to May, can bring unpredictable weather and harsh winds, but it also means newborn foals on the steppe and a landscape slowly coming back to life.
