Weather in Mozambique

The best time to visit Mozambique is during the dry season, which runs from May through November. During this period, the skies are clear, humidity is low, and road conditions in the interior are at their best. June through September is ideal for beach holidays on the coast and the islands, with warm sea temperatures, excellent visibility for diving and snorkelling, and reliable sunshine. Whale sharks gather off Tofo and Inhambane from October through February, with the peak aggregation usually between November and January, drawing divers from around the world.

The rainy season from December through April brings heavy downpours, high humidity, and the risk of cyclones — particularly along the central and northern coasts. Flooding can make dirt roads impassable and disrupt travel in rural areas. That said, the summer months bring lush green landscapes and excellent birdwatching, and the coast can be glorious between storm systems. The southern beaches around Tofo, Vilanculos, and the Bazaruto Archipelago are year-round destinations for beach lovers, but divers and snorkellers will generally find the clearest water and calmest seas in the dry-season months of June through October.
