Weather in Papua New Guinea

The best time to visit Papua New Guinea depends on which region you plan to explore. For the Highlands — including Goroka, Mount Hagen, and Tari — the dry season from May through October offers the most comfortable trekking conditions, clear mountain views, and the ideal windows for the major cultural festivals. The Goroka Show is held in September during Independence celebrations, and the Mount Hagen Cultural Show typically takes place in August, making this two-month window the peak season for cultural tourism in the country.

For diving and snorkeling in Milne Bay or Kimbe Bay, conditions are generally excellent from November through April when the Coral Sea is calm and underwater visibility is at its finest. The lowland coastal regions are humid year-round, with heavier rainfall from December through March — but even in the wet season, mornings are often clear and the rainforest is at its most lush and wildlife-active. The Sepik River region is best explored between May and October when water levels drop enough to navigate smaller tributaries by dugout canoe and reach remote village communities.
