Weather in Portugal

Portugal rewards visits in almost every season, but the sweet spot falls between April and October. Spring (April–June) is arguably the finest time, offering mild temperatures of 18–25°C, wildflower meadows across the Alentejo, and fewer crowds than the summer peak. Lisbon and Porto in May are particularly glorious, with long evenings ideal for dining al fresco and festival season building momentum. The Algarve beaches are already warm and inviting from June onwards.

July and August are peak season — beaches are crowded, accommodation prices peak, and coastal towns hum with activity. If you prefer culture over beach holidays, September and October offer warm weather, harvested vineyards ripe for visiting in the Douro, and significantly lower prices. Winter (November–March) is mild by northern European standards — Lisbon rarely drops below 10°C — making it a pleasant off-season escape, especially for city breaks. The Madeira and Azores archipelagos are year-round destinations, each with their own optimal windows tied to ocean conditions.
