Weather in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. The dry season, running from November through April, is the most popular time to visit. During these months, the harmattan wind brings drier, cooler air from the Sahara, reducing humidity and making outdoor travel more comfortable. January and February are the peak months, offering the best beach weather, easiest road conditions, and optimal wildlife-viewing in the national parks. This is also the best time for hiking in the Loma Mountains.

The wet season from May to October brings heavy rainfall, particularly in July and August when monthly totals can exceed 700mm in Freetown. Roads become difficult or impassable in rural areas, and river crossings can be challenging. However, the wet season transforms the landscape into a lush, intensely green world, waterfalls flow at their most spectacular, and accommodation prices are lower. Birdwatching is excellent during the rains, as migratory species arrive from Europe and the north. With good preparation, the wet season can offer a rewarding off-the-beaten-track experience.
