Weather in South Africa

South Africa's best time to visit depends strongly on which part of the country you are targeting, as the country spans multiple climate zones. For the Cape Town and Western Cape region, the best time is October through April — the Southern Hemisphere summer — when warm temperatures, long days, and reliably dry weather make the Garden Route, Winelands, and Cape Peninsula exceptionally beautiful. Cape Town's winter from June through August is mild but rainy, though this also coincides with whale season when southern right whales appear along the coast.

For wildlife safaris in Kruger and the Limpopo bushveld, the dry winter months from May through September are strongly preferred. Vegetation is sparse, animals congregate around waterholes, and the risk of malaria is reduced. Game viewing is simply better during these months. The summer wet season from October through April brings lush green landscapes and dramatic thunderstorms but taller grass can make spotting animals more challenging. KwaZulu-Natal's coast near Durban is warm and humid year-round, with the sardine run from May to July attracting spectacular marine wildlife including sharks, dolphins, and seabirds in one of the ocean's great natural spectacles.
