Weather in Switzerland

Switzerland offers genuinely compelling reasons to visit in every season, though your choice of timing should depend on whether the mountains or the cities are your priority. Summer, from June through September, is prime hiking and outdoor swimming season. Alpine meadows burst into colour, the mountain hut network opens fully, and temperatures in the valleys hover pleasantly around 25°C. This is when the famous long-distance trails like the Via Alpina and the Bernese Oberland circuits are at their most accessible. The famous resorts of Zermatt, Grindelwald, and St. Moritz switch effortlessly from ski to hike mode, with many lifts operating year-round to carry walkers high into the mountains.

Winter, from December through March, is Switzerland at its most postcard-perfect. The ski season is among the best in Europe, with reliable snow, immaculately groomed pistes, and a tradition of alpine hospitality that makes après-ski as important as the skiing itself. December brings Christmas markets of exceptional quality to Basel, Bern, and Zurich, with mulled wine and artisan crafts illuminated against snow-frosted medieval backdrops. Spring (April–May) can be unpredictable — mountain passes may still be closed and the weather changeable — but the valley floors bloom with extraordinary wildflowers and the tourist crowds are thin. Autumn (September–October) brings golden light, wine harvest festivals in the Lavaux vineyards, and cooler but reliably clear hiking conditions.
