The territory of modern Tajikistan has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era, with the Bactrian and Sogdian civilizations of the first millennium BC establishing trading cities along the proto-Silk Road that became legendary waypoints of ancient commerce. The region was conquered by Alexander the Great in 329 BC — the city of Khujand was founded as Alexandria Eschate, "Alexandria the Farthest" — and later absorbed into the Kushan and Sasanian empires before the Arab conquest brought Islam in the 7th and 8th centuries AD.

Visa Overview
Most nationalities can obtain a Tajikistan e-Visa online through the official government portal, with the process taking three to five business days and costing approximately $50 USD. Citizens of CIS countries and a small number of others may enter visa-free. If you plan to visit the Pamir Highway and the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO), you must add the GBAO permit to your e-Visa application — this is a separate endorsement that must be requested at the time of application. Getting Around
