Weather in Tonga

The best time to visit Tonga is from May to October, during the dry season, when temperatures are pleasant and rainfall is at its lowest. June through November is especially prized because these months coincide with the annual humpback whale migration, when the gentle giants visit Tongan waters to breed and calve. Water visibility for diving and snorkeling is exceptional during this period, and the cooler trade winds make island exploration comfortable. Average temperatures during these months range from 18°C to 27°C (64°F to 81°F).

From November to April, Tonga enters its wet season, bringing higher humidity, heavier rainfall, and the risk of tropical cyclones — particularly between December and March. Despite this, some travelers choose the wet season for its lush green scenery and fewer crowds. If you're visiting primarily for the beaches and reef diving outside of whale season, April and May offer a sweet spot between the retreating wet season and the arrival of peak visitor numbers. Whenever you arrive, pack light, breathable clothing and sunscreen, as the tropical sun is fierce year-round.
