Best Time to Visit United States Virgin Islands

The US Virgin Islands enjoy a warm tropical climate year-round, with trade winds providing welcome relief from the heat and temperatures typically ranging from 24°C to 31°C. The peak tourist season runs from mid-December through April, when the weather is at its driest and most reliably pleasant. This period coincides with the influx of mainland Americans escaping winter, so accommodation prices are at their highest and popular beaches are busiest. The annual Carnival celebrations are well worth timing your visit around: St. Thomas Carnival takes place in late April and early May, while St. Croix holds its Christmas Carnival in late December and early January.

The shoulder season from May through June offers excellent value — the weather remains warm and dry, the crowds have thinned, and accommodation prices drop considerably. The hurricane season officially runs from June through November, with the greatest risk of tropical storms and hurricanes between August and October. While the USVI have been impacted by significant storms in the past — Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 were particularly devastating — the islands have rebuilt extensively and the hurricane threat should not be overstated for most of the shoulder season. July through early August can be a good compromise: still within the early hurricane season but typically enjoying fine beach weather at reduced prices.
