Weather in Uruguay

Uruguay's climate is temperate and relatively mild year-round, but the best time to visit depends on what you are looking for. Summer, from December through February, is peak season — the time when Punta del Este transforms into one of South America's most fashionable and energetic beach destinations and the Atlantic coast fills with sunbathers, surfers, and a buzzing social scene. Temperatures reach around 28–32°C on the coast, the days are long, and the entire country seems to take a collective holiday. Carnival season, which begins in late January and runs through February and into early March, is the absolute highlight of the Uruguayan social calendar, particularly in Montevideo where the streets come alive with candombe drumming, murga performances, and spectacular costumed processions.

For those seeking a quieter and more exploratory Uruguay, the shoulder seasons of March through May and September through November offer excellent conditions. Spring (September–November) brings mild temperatures around 18–22°C, lush green countryside, and the first blooming of jacaranda trees in Montevideo. Autumn (March–May) is arguably the country's most beautiful season: the pampas grass turns golden, the tourist crowds have departed, and the wine regions around Canelones are in harvest. Winter (June–August) is mild by southern hemisphere standards — rarely below 5°C — but the beach resorts close and the country takes on a pleasantly rainy, introspective character that suits Montevideo's café culture perfectly.
