About Vietnam

Vietnam stretches nearly 1,700 kilometres from its northern mountain borderlands to the tropical tip of the Mekong Delta, and the country packs a lifetime of experiences into that narrow S-shaped strip of land. From the terraced rice fields cascading down the hills around Sapa in the cool north, to the ancient lantern-lit streets of Hoi An, to the limestone karsts erupting from the still waters of Ha Long Bay — Vietnam rewards every type of traveller with scenery, food, and cultural depth that rank among the finest Southeast Asia has to offer.

What consistently surprises first-time visitors is how dynamic and forward-looking modern Vietnam feels alongside its preserved history. Hanoi's French colonial quarter and ancient Temple of Literature stand just blocks from rooftop cocktail bars and creative coffee shops. Ho Chi Minh City pulses with entrepreneurial energy, yet a short motorbike ride leads you to colonial-era pagodas and villages making traditional lacquerware by hand. The middle stretch — Da Nang, Hue, and Hoi An — forms a golden triangle of beaches, royal citadels, and Cham ruins that could occupy a week on its own.

Vietnamese people are notably entrepreneurial, curious, and intensely proud of their country's resilience — a nation that fought off Chinese domination for a thousand years, then French colonialism, then American military intervention, and emerged to become one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia. That pride manifests in the quality of everything from a bowl of pho served from a street stall to the meticulous restoration of a 17th-century merchant house. Vietnam is vibrant, affordable, and endlessly engaging — a destination that consistently ranks at the top of return-visit lists for good reason.

History & Background

Vietnamese civilisation has roots stretching back over 4,000 years to the Dong Son culture, whose extraordinary bronze drums testify to a sophisticated Bronze Age society in the Red River Delta. Chinese domination, beginning in 111 BCE and lasting nearly a thousand years, profoundly shaped Vietnamese language, governance, and culture — yet Vietnamese identity never dissolved into Chinese identity, and repeated revolts culminated in independence in 939 CE under Ngô Quyền. Subsequent Vietnamese dynasties — Ly, Tran, Le — built a powerful, culturally rich kingdom that successfully resisted Mongol invasions in the 13th century.

French colonial rule from the mid-19th century introduced Catholicism, the romanised Quoc Ngu script, and urban architecture while creating deep economic resentment. Ho Chi Minh led the independence movement that defeated France at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, but the subsequent division of the country along the 17th parallel set the stage for the devastating American War (1955–1975). Reunification under communist rule came in 1976, but it was the Doi Moi economic reforms of 1986 that truly transformed the country — opening Vietnam to market forces and international investment, and launching the remarkable economic ascent that has lifted tens of millions out of poverty.

Culture & People

Vietnamese culture is shaped by Confucian values emphasising filial piety, community harmony, and education, filtered through centuries of Taoist, Buddhist, and Catholic influences. Family is the fundamental social unit — multi-generational households are common, and respect for elders is deeply embedded in both language and behaviour. The Vietnamese language itself encodes social hierarchy through its complex system of personal pronouns, each calibrated to the relative age and status of speaker and listener.

Tet Nguyen Dan — the lunar new year celebration — is the cultural high point of the year, when the entire country empties of workers heading home to their families, and cities erupt in fireworks, dragon dances, and the rich smell of incense from every pagoda. The arts are rich and regionally varied: water puppetry, developed in the Red River Delta in the 11th century, is uniquely Vietnamese; ca trù classical singing has UNESCO intangible heritage status; and the áo dài — the elegant long tunic worn over wide trousers — remains the national dress, worn by schoolgirls and brides alike. Regional differences between north, centre, and south are pronounced, encompassing dialect, cuisine, temperament, and historical memory.

Food & Cuisine

Vietnamese cuisine is celebrated worldwide for its extraordinary balance of flavours — light, aromatic, and built on a foundation of fresh herbs, rice noodles, and slow-simmered broths. Pho, the fragrant noodle soup of star anise-scented beef or chicken broth topped with paper-thin slices of beef and a plate of bean sprouts, basil, chilli, and lime, is the national soul food — consumed at breakfast, midnight, and everything in between. Bun bo Hue, banh mi, cao lau, and com tam each represent the distinct regional cooking traditions of central and southern Vietnam, and exploring them is one of travel's great pleasures.

Street food culture is inseparable from the Vietnamese experience. Squat plastic stools, open-air kitchens, and the sizzle of cooking from dawn to midnight characterise every town and city. Banh mi — the Vietnamese baguette filled with pâté, pickled vegetables, and fresh herbs, a perfect fusion of French and Vietnamese culinary traditions — is widely recognised as one of the world's great sandwiches. Fresh spring rolls (goi cuon) and fried spring rolls (nem ran) appear on every menu alongside broken rice plates and sugarcane shrimp. Vietnamese coffee — dark, strong, and sweetened with condensed milk, served hot or over ice — has become a global phenomenon but tastes best sitting on a tiny stool on a Hanoi pavement.

Top Attractions

  • Ha Long Bay — Nearly 2,000 limestone karst islands and islets rising from the Gulf of Tonkin, best explored on a two-night liveaboard cruise through its mist-wrapped channels.
  • Hoi An Ancient Town — A beautifully preserved 15th-century trading port of lantern-strung streets, tailor shops, and excellent restaurants, UNESCO-listed and most magical at night.
  • Hue Imperial Citadel — The walled royal capital of the Nguyen dynasty, containing palaces, temples, and ornate royal tombs set along the Perfume River.
  • Sapa Rice Terraces — Breathtaking stepped rice paddies carved into the Hoang Lien Son Mountains, home to H'mong and Dao ethnic minority communities.
  • Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park — Home to Son Doong, the world's largest cave, alongside dozens of other spectacular caverns and jungle rivers accessible by kayak.
  • Ho Chi Minh City — A frenetic, ambitious city where colonial-era markets, war museums, and Buddhist pagodas coexist with gleaming skyscrapers and one of Asia's best street food scenes.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Book overnight trains for the Hanoi–Hue and Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City routes well in advance; soft sleeper berths sell out quickly in peak season.
  • Learn a few basic Vietnamese phrases — even a mangled "xin chao" (hello) earns enormous goodwill from locals.
  • Negotiate motorbike taxi (xe om) and cyclo prices before boarding; always wear the helmet provided.
  • Dress respectfully when visiting pagodas and temples — cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes at the entrance.
  • Carry Vietnamese dong for street food and markets; many stalls do not accept cards and exchange rates at small kiosks can be poor.
  • Use Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber equivalent) for affordable, transparent-priced rides in all major Vietnamese cities.
  • Avoid the monsoon season on the central coast (October–December) when flooding can close roads and disrupt travel plans significantly.

Visa Overview

Vietnam has expanded its e-visa programme significantly, and citizens of most countries can now apply for a 90-day single or multiple-entry e-visa online through the official Vietnam Immigration portal before arrival. The e-visa costs around USD 25 and typically takes three business days to process. Citizens of several countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and a growing list of others, are eligible for visa-free entry for 45 days. Always check the latest visa policy for your nationality before travel, as the rules have changed frequently in recent years. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure.

Getting Around

Vietnam has excellent internal transport options. Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, and Bamboo Airways connect all major cities quickly and affordably — book domestic flights early for the best prices. The Reunification Express train running the length of the country is a classic journey; overnight sleeper trains between Hanoi and Hue are comfortable and scenic. Open Bus tickets connecting major tourist stops from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City are a popular budget option. In cities, Grab is the safest and most transparent option for taxis and motorbike taxis. Hiring a private driver for day trips offers great flexibility at reasonable cost.

Safety Notes

Vietnam is generally a safe destination for travellers. Petty theft — bag snatching from motorbikes, pickpocketing in crowded markets — is the most common hazard; keep bags on the indoor side of cafe tables and avoid displaying expensive items while walking. Traffic is the most genuine danger: Vietnamese cities, especially Ho Chi Minh City, have chaotic motorbike traffic and crossing the road requires nerve and a steady pace. Road accidents are common on rural routes. Scams targeting tourists (overcharging, rigged taxi meters) occur but can be avoided by using Grab and negotiating prices in advance.
