About Aruba

Aruba is the jewel of the Dutch Caribbean — a small, sun-drenched island just off the northern coast of Venezuela that has built a well-deserved reputation as one of the happiest and most consistently beautiful beach destinations in the world. Unlike many Caribbean islands, Aruba sits outside the hurricane belt, meaning it enjoys reliably sunny weather and gentle trade winds almost every single day of the year. That extraordinary climatic consistency is just one of the reasons visitors return here year after year, often for decades.

Eagle Beach and Palm Beach — two legendary stretches of blindingly white sand on Aruba's western coast — rank consistently among the world's finest beaches, with warm, calm, crystal-clear Caribbean water of a turquoise intensity that photographs struggle to fully capture. The northwest coast is the postcard face of Aruba: luxury resorts, water sports, sailing excursions, and glorious sunsets over the sea. But venture away from the resort strip and you discover a wilder, more authentic island: the rugged rocky eastern coast battered by Atlantic waves, the otherworldly landscape of Arikok National Park, and the pastel-painted Dutch colonial buildings of the charming capital, Oranjestad.

History & Background

The Caquetío, a branch of the Arawak people, were Aruba's original inhabitants, living on the island for centuries before the arrival of Alonso de Ojeda with Spanish explorers in 1499. The Spanish colonised the island and initially transported most of the indigenous population to Hispaniola as forced labour, though many Arawak people remained and their descendants still make up part of the Aruban population today. The Dutch West India Company seized Aruba from Spain in 1636, and the island has been under Dutch sovereignty — with one interruption during the Napoleonic Wars — ever since.

Aruba's modern economic history took a dramatic turn in 1924 when Lago Oil and Transport, a subsidiary of Standard Oil (later Exxon), established one of the world's largest oil refineries on the island. For decades, the refinery was the backbone of the Aruban economy and transformed it into a relatively prosperous society. When the refinery declined and eventually closed in 1985, Aruba pivoted decisively to tourism — a transition that has been remarkably successful. The island achieved "Status Aparte" as a separate constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1986, giving it a degree of autonomy it continues to exercise today.

Culture & People

Aruban culture is a fascinating blend of Dutch, Spanish, Caribbean, and indigenous Arawak influences that has produced a uniquely warm, multilingual, and outward-looking society. The local language, Papiamento (or Papiamentu), is a colourful creole language that mixes Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English, and African elements in a way that perfectly reflects the island's hybrid cultural heritage. Most Arubans speak at least four languages — Papiamento, Dutch, Spanish, and English — a linguistic versatility that makes visitors feel instantly at ease.

The island's Arawak heritage, though largely lost through colonisation, is honoured in the Arikok National Park cave drawings and the Museo Arubano in Oranjestad. Dutch influence is visible in the distinctive gabled architecture of Oranjestad's colourful downtown buildings and in the formal institutions of government and education. But the soul of Aruba beats to Caribbean rhythms: Carnival (held in January and February) is the island's greatest celebration, filling the streets with elaborate costumes, steel bands, and a joy that is genuinely infectious. The tumba and calypso competitions that precede the main parade are deeply fought cultural contests.

Food & Cuisine

Aruban cuisine is a delicious reflection of the island's cultural crossroads — a blend of Dutch, Spanish, Caribbean, and indigenous Arawak influences served with the warmth and generosity typical of Caribbean hospitality. Keshi yena — a stuffed Gouda cheese rind filled with spiced meat, olives, and raisins that is baked until golden and molten — is the unofficial national dish and a must-try experience that perfectly encapsulates the Dutch-Caribbean fusion at the heart of local cooking. Seafood features prominently in traditional preparations: fish stews, grilled mahi-mahi, and fresh shrimp prepared with local herbs and spices are found at restaurants throughout the island.

Palm Beach and Eagle Beach are lined with dining options from casual beach bars serving cold Balashi (the local lager) and fish tacos to upscale oceanfront restaurants. But the best local food is often found away from the resort strip: the Wilhelminastraat area in Oranjestad is known for authentic Aruban restaurants where locals eat, and the weekly Aruba Night Market is a lively showcase of local food culture. Try pastechi — fried pastry pockets stuffed with cheese or meat — at a local bakery for a true taste of everyday Aruban breakfast food.

Top Attractions

  • Eagle Beach — One of the widest, most uncrowded, and consistently highest-rated beaches in the Caribbean, with white powder sand and extraordinary clear water backed by low-rise resorts.
  • Arikok National Park — Covering nearly 20% of the island, this dramatic rocky landscape features indigenous cave drawings, natural pools, giant cacti, and the wild Atlantic coastline.
  • Natural Pool (Conchi) — A secret volcanic rock pool on the northeastern coast, accessible only by 4x4 or guided tour, offering sheltered swimming in a naturally formed basin above crashing Atlantic waves.
  • Oranjestad — Aruba's charming capital, with colourful Dutch colonial architecture, excellent duty-free shopping, a lively waterfront, and several good museums.
  • California Lighthouse — A historic lighthouse at the island's northern tip surrounded by dramatic desert landscape, offering panoramic views and spectacular sunsets.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Aruba is outside the hurricane belt but December–April is peak season with highest prices; May–June and November offer great value with near-identical weather.
  • Rent a 4x4 vehicle to explore the rugged eastern coast and Arikok National Park — regular cars are not suitable for the rocky dirt roads in the interior.
  • The trade winds make Aruba's northern coast genuinely rough for swimming; stick to the calm, sheltered western coast beaches for safe swimming.
  • Eagle Beach is less developed and quieter than Palm Beach and consistently rated among the world's best beaches — it's worth the slightly longer walk or taxi ride.
  • Drinking water from the tap is safe in Aruba — the island has an advanced desalination plant and the water quality is excellent.
  • The US dollar is accepted everywhere alongside the Aruban florin (AWG), making the island particularly easy for American visitors.

Visa Overview

As a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Aruba has its own entry requirements. Citizens of the EU, US, Canada, and most Western nations do not require a visa to visit Aruba for tourist stays of up to 90 days. All visitors must complete an Embarkation/Disembarkation card (ED card), now required to be filled in online via the Aruba Health App before arrival. A valid passport, return ticket, proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds are required. An airport departure tax is charged on departure, typically included in airline ticket prices.

Getting Around

Queen Beatrix International Airport in Oranjestad receives direct flights from across North America, Europe, and South America. On the island, a reliable and inexpensive bus system (Arubus) connects the airport, Oranjestad, and the hotel strip along Palm Beach. Taxis are widely available but fares are fixed and can be expensive for longer journeys; always confirm the fare before boarding. Renting a car gives the most flexibility, particularly for exploring Arikok National Park and the eastern coast. ATV rentals are popular for exploring off-road areas.

Safety Notes

Aruba is consistently rated as one of the safest islands in the Caribbean, with low violent crime rates and a tourism-focused population that is genuinely welcoming. Petty theft can occur around beaches and resorts, so avoid leaving valuables unattended on the sand. The main natural hazards are the strong currents and rough surf on the island's northern and eastern Atlantic coasts — swim only in designated areas on the sheltered western coast. Sun intensity is extreme; high-SPF sunscreen, hydration, and shade during peak hours (11am–3pm) are essential.
