Bahamas

The Bahamas is an archipelago of extraordinary natural beauty — 700 islands and 2,400 cays scattered across 100,000 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba and east of Florida, draped with some of the most spectacular marine scenery on the planet. The water here is the stuff of dreams: shallow banks of vivid turquoise gradually deepening to cobalt blue, with visibility so clear that you can see the rippled sand bottom from twenty feet above. The country holds the world record for the clearest ocean water ever measured, and when you first see the Exumas or stand on Harbour Island's pink sand beach, you understand immediately why this place has been captivating visitors for centuries.

Nassau, the capital on New Providence island, serves as the main hub and gives the Bahamas its party reputation — cruise ships disgorge thousands of passengers daily into the downtown area, and the resort hotels of Cable Beach and Paradise Island's Atlantis complex offer glitzy, all-inclusive Caribbean entertainment on an impressive scale. But the Bahamas that most deeply rewards travellers lies beyond Nassau: the quieter Out Islands, where small communities live close to the sea and the pace drops to something approaching geological.

The Exumas, a 120-mile chain of islands and cays, offer some of the most beautiful sailing and boating waters in the Atlantic, with the famous swimming pigs of Big Major Cay as perhaps the most photographed attraction in the entire Caribbean. Eleuthera, Long Island, and the Abacos each offer their own distinct character — historical settlements, excellent diving, and a kind of unhurried beauty that is increasingly rare in the world.

The Bahamas holds a place of particular significance in the story of European exploration: it was here, on the island of Guanahani (which Columbus named San Salvador) in October 1492, that Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the Americas. The Lucayan people who greeted him had inhabited the islands for centuries, but within a few decades of European contact their entire population had been wiped out by disease and enslavement by the Spanish. The islands remained largely unsettled by Europeans until 1648, when a group of English Puritans established the first permanent settlement on Eleuthera — a name derived from the Greek word for freedom.

Nassau became the base of the world's most notorious concentration of pirates in the early 18th century, with figures including Blackbeard and Calico Jack operating from its harbour until a crackdown by the British governor Woodes Rogers in 1718. The famous motto on the Bahamian coat of arms — "Expulsis Piratis, Restituta Commercia" (Pirates Expelled, Commerce Restored) — commemorates this era. The Bahamas gained independence from Britain on 10 July 1973, and today the country remains a Commonwealth realm with King Charles III as head of state. The nation's economy is dominated by tourism and offshore financial services.

Bahamian culture is a vibrant fusion of African heritage, British colonial history, and the irrepressible Caribbean spirit that finds its most exuberant expression in the Junkanoo festival. Junkanoo — held on Boxing Day (26 December) and New Year's Day in Nassau and across the islands — is perhaps the Bahamas' greatest cultural gift to the world: a spectacular parade of costumes, drumming, cowbells, and dancing that begins at midnight and continues until dawn, drawing contestants who have spent months and small fortunes building their elaborately decorated outfits. The intensity and creativity of Junkanoo reveals depths of Bahamian artistic and communal life that tourists who experience only the resort strip never encounter.

Music is central to Bahamian identity, from the spiritual call-and-response tradition of Rake 'n' Scrape music played on saws, goatskin drums, and accordion, to the modern soca and reggae that fills the beach bars. Christianity is deeply embedded in Bahamian life — the country has more churches per capita than almost anywhere else on Earth, and Sundays are taken seriously. The Out Islands in particular maintain a quieter, more traditional pace of life that reflects the strong community bonds and religious foundations of Bahamian society, offering a very different experience from the Nassau resort scene.

Bahamian cuisine is a fresh, flavourful celebration of the sea, built on fish and shellfish pulled from some of the world's most pristine waters. Conch — the large pink-shelled mollusc native to these waters — is the undisputed centrepiece of Bahamian cooking, appearing in conch salad (fresh, raw conch cured in lime juice with peppers and onions), conch fritters (deep-fried batter rounds), conch chowder, and cracked conch (pounded and fried). A fresh conch salad prepared by a vendor at Potter's Cay Dock in Nassau — made in front of you with astonishing speed and dexterity — is one of the Caribbean's great street food experiences.

Fish is another constant: grilled grouper, fried snapper, and steamed triggerfish are served throughout the islands, often accompanied by peas and rice (the national side dish), johnnycakes (a dense cornbread), and plantains. Rock lobster from the Out Islands is considered exceptional and is typically grilled over coals with butter and citrus. The Bahamas is also known for its rum cocktails — the legendary Goombay Smash (rum, coconut rum, pineapple juice, and apricot brandy) was invented at Miss Emily's Blue Bee Bar on Green Turtle Cay, and is the perfect companion to a sunset over the turquoise water.
