About Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a country that consistently surprises first-time visitors who arrive expecting little and leave with their hearts full. Wedged between India and Myanmar on the vast delta formed by the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers, this densely populated nation rewards the adventurous traveller with extraordinary natural landscapes, ancient archaeological wonders, and some of the most genuine, unguarded hospitality you will encounter anywhere in South Asia. The entire country pulses with life — rickshaws weave through flower markets, river ferries shoulder through monsoon-swollen channels, and every village seems to erupt in colour during one of its many festivals.

The Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest shared with India, stretches across Bangladesh's southwestern coastline, sheltering the elusive Royal Bengal tiger, spotted deer, and saltwater crocodiles within its labyrinthine tidal channels. To the north, the emerald tea gardens of Sylhet roll across hillsides in neat geometric rows, while the hill tracts of Chittagong offer trekking through tribal communities whose traditions have remained largely unchanged for centuries. And yet it is the waterways — the hundreds of rivers, canals, and haors that crisscross the land — that define Bangladesh most truly. To travel by boat here is to see the country as its people have always experienced it.

Dhaka, the riotous capital, may be one of the world's most intense urban environments, but beneath the surface chaos lies a city of remarkable culture. The old quarter of Puran Dhaka preserves Mughal-era mosques, Armenian churches, and Hindu temples within walking distance of each other. Muslin weavers still practice their extraordinary craft in Rupganj, and the art scene centred on Dhanmondi is quietly flourishing. Bangladesh rewards patience and openness — and those who offer both will find it one of South Asia's most memorable destinations.

History & Background

The Bengal delta has been home to sophisticated civilisations for over two thousand years. The Pala Empire, which flourished from the eighth to twelfth centuries CE, produced some of Buddhism's greatest philosophical minds and built the Somapura Mahavihara at Paharpur — now a UNESCO World Heritage Site — which at its height housed over 3,000 monks and spread Buddhist learning across Asia. The region then passed through Muslim sultanates, the Mughal Empire under which Dhaka became a provincial capital famed worldwide for its gossamer muslin cloth, and then British colonial rule from the late eighteenth century onward.

Partition in 1947 created East Pakistan, a geographic anomaly separated from West Pakistan by over 1,500 kilometres of Indian territory. Cultural and economic tensions, particularly over the suppression of the Bengali language, erupted in the Liberation War of 1971. After nine months of devastating conflict in which millions perished, Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation on December 16th, 1971 — Victory Day, still the country's most emotionally resonant national celebration. The intervening decades have seen remarkable economic development, particularly driven by the garment industry, and Bangladesh has become one of the world's most cited examples of progress in poverty reduction and women's empowerment.

Culture & People

Bangladeshi culture is rooted in Bengali identity, which transcends the political border with West Bengal and encompasses a shared language, literature, music, and cuisine that rank among the subcontinent's most sophisticated. The Bengali language itself holds a place of extraordinary reverence — the Language Movement of 1952, when students gave their lives to defend Bengali against the imposition of Urdu, is commemorated each year on February 21st, a date now recognised globally as International Mother Language Day. Poetry, particularly the work of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam, is memorised and recited with genuine passion from childhood.

The vast majority of Bangladeshis are Muslim, and Islam shapes daily rhythms from the pre-dawn call to prayer to the communal iftaar meals of Ramadan. Yet the country maintains a strongly syncretic cultural tradition: Hindu Durga Puja processions fill city streets each autumn, the Baul mystic minstrel tradition bridges religious divides, and the spring festival of Pohela Boishakh — the Bengali New Year — is celebrated by all communities with equal fervour. Handloom weaving, particularly the legendary jamdani muslin, has UNESCO recognition, and the tradition of nakshi kantha embroidered quilts represents some of the finest textile folk art in Asia.

Food & Cuisine

Bengali cuisine from Bangladesh is rich, river-centred, and built around fish, rice, and an arsenal of spices that speak to centuries of trade and influence. Hilsa (ilish), a silver-scaled river fish prized across the entire subcontinent, is Bangladesh's national fish and its preparation borders on the ceremonial — mustard-seed hilsa curry cooked in mustard oil, hilsa smoked over rice husks, hilsa steamed in banana leaf. The daily meal across the country follows a pattern of rice, dal, and at least one fish curry, with vegetables and sometimes meat adding complexity. Beef biriyani, fragrant with whole spices and saffron, is a Dhaka speciality, particularly celebrated in the old city's legendary eateries.

Street food culture in Bangladesh is extraordinary and safe enough for careful travellers to enjoy freely. Fuchka — hollow wheat puffs filled with spiced potato and tamarind water — are the nation's favourite snack, sold from street carts as the sun sets. Pitha, rice cakes stuffed with coconut and date palm jaggery, fill the streets during winter months. Mishti doi, a creamy baked sweet yoghurt set in terracotta pots, is Bangladesh's definitive dessert and available in sweetshops across the country. A meal is never considered complete without a cup of strong, sweet, milky cha brewed roadside in an enormous steel pot.

Top Attractions

  • Sundarbans National Park — The world's largest mangrove forest, home to the Royal Bengal tiger and an extraordinary ecosystem of tidal channels, spotted deer, and kingfishers, best explored by guided boat safari.
  • Somapura Mahavihara, Paharpur — A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest Buddhist monastery south of the Himalayas, dating to the eighth century CE and still hauntingly impressive in its ruined grandeur.
  • Lalbagh Fort, Dhaka — An atmospheric Mughal-era fortification in old Dhaka, begun in 1678 and never completed, featuring a mausoleum, mosque, and beautiful gardens.
  • Sylhet Tea Gardens — Rolling emerald hills carpeted in tea bushes, best explored by renting a bicycle or auto-rickshaw and wandering between garden estates as workers harvest leaves at dawn.
  • Shat Gombuj Mosque, Bagerhat — Another UNESCO site, this fifteenth-century mosque of sixty domes built by the saint Khan Jahan Ali is one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in South Asia.
  • Cox's Bazar — The world's longest natural sea beach at 120 kilometres, an extraordinary stretch of golden sand along the Bay of Bengal, lively with domestic tourism and spectacular sunsets.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Hire a reliable local guide for navigating Dhaka's old quarter and the Sundarbans — their knowledge dramatically enhances safety, logistics, and cultural context.
  • Cash in Bangladeshi taka is essential outside Dhaka; ATMs are rare in rural areas and card payment is uncommon beyond upscale hotels.
  • Dress conservatively everywhere, particularly women — loose-fitting, covered clothing is respectful and also practical in the heat and humidity.
  • Drink only bottled or purified water and be selective about street food until your stomach has acclimatised; stomach upsets are common for first-time visitors.
  • River ferries are a wonderful and authentic way to travel between cities — book upper-class berths well in advance for overnight journeys on the major routes.
  • Photography of people is generally welcomed with a smile and a request, but always ask permission, especially for women and in religious contexts.
  • Register your visit with your country's embassy in Dhaka and keep a photocopy of your passport and visa separate from the originals.

Visa Overview

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Bangladesh, obtainable through an e-visa portal (evisa.immigration.gov.bd) or at Bangladeshi embassies abroad. Visa-on-arrival is available for certain nationalities at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport but policies change and pre-applying online is more reliable. Tourist visas are typically issued for 30 days. Nationals of some South Asian countries have simplified entry arrangements. Always check current requirements with your nearest Bangladeshi embassy before booking, and ensure your passport has at least six months of validity beyond your intended departure date.

Getting Around

Dhaka's traffic is legendary for its density — budget two to three hours for cross-city journeys during peak hours. Ride-hailing apps including Pathao and Shohoz operate reliably within Dhaka and are far safer than flagging down unknown taxis. For intercity travel, the Bangladesh Railway network is comfortable and scenic; book advance tickets online or at Kamalapur station. For the Sundarbans and Chittagong Hill Tracts, hiring a private car with driver is the most practical approach. River ferries operated by BIWTC connect Dhaka to Khulna and Barisal on memorable overnight journeys.

Safety Notes

Bangladesh is generally safe for tourists who take standard precautions. Petty theft, particularly in crowded bus stations and markets, warrants attention to bags and valuables. Avoid political demonstrations, which can turn volatile with little warning. The Chittagong Hill Tracts require permits and some areas near the Myanmar border have ongoing security concerns — check your government's current advisory. Water-borne diseases are a risk during and after monsoon flooding. Dhaka traffic poses a genuine hazard for pedestrians; always use pedestrian bridges where available.
