About Belgium

Belgium is one of Europe's great underrated destinations — a compact country that holds more Michelin-starred restaurants per capita than France, more UNESCO-listed medieval town centres than most of its neighbours, and a cultural output in art, architecture, comics, beer, and chocolate that would be extraordinary even in a nation ten times its size. When you arrive in Brussels, the capital that also happens to be the de facto capital of the European Union, you quickly realise that Belgium's reputation for modesty is the biggest mystery in a country full of them. The Grand Place, ringed by gilded guild houses and illuminated at night like a stage set, is one of Europe's most beautiful squares and should be experienced at multiple times of day.

Flanders to the north and Wallonia to the south offer entirely different characters — the former's Flemish Gothic cities of Bruges, Ghent, and Antwerp are among the best-preserved medieval urban environments anywhere in the world, their canals and belfries unchanged in essence from the Flemish masters who painted them. Bruges in particular operates in a state of suspended animation that some find romantic and others find theatrical; Ghent is livelier, grittier, and increasingly regarded as the more authentic alternative. Antwerp wears its diamond-trading and fashion-design credentials with a cool confidence that makes it one of Europe's most stylish cities.

Wallonia's Ardennes forest region provides a completely different proposition: dense woodland, castle-topped hills, kayaking on clear rivers, and the Belgian hot chocolate culture reaching its most earnest form in small towns that see few foreign visitors. The battlefields of Flanders and the Meuse valley carry a weight of World War I and II history that makes them among the most emotionally powerful heritage sites in the world. Belgium somehow combines all of these registers — the playful and the profound, the artisanal and the monumental — in a space you can traverse in two hours.

History & Background

The territory of modern Belgium has been a contested crossroads for millennia — Julius Caesar famously declared the Belgae the bravest of all the Gauls, and the region's strategic position between the Rhine and the North Sea ensured it would rarely know prolonged peace. During the medieval period, the cities of Flanders — particularly Ghent and Bruges — became among the wealthiest on earth, centres of wool-cloth manufacture and banking that rivalled Venice and Florence. The Burgundian dukes of the fifteenth century made Brussels their court and commissioned some of the greatest art and tapestry ever produced.

Belgian independence from the Netherlands was declared in 1830 following a revolution inspired by the Brussels opera season — a fact that Belgians relate with some amusement. The new kingdom industrialised rapidly, and the Congo Free State, King Leopold II's personal colonial possession, became the site of one of history's most horrific human rights catastrophes. Belgium's position on the front line of both world wars left the country with landscapes scarred by trenches and dotted with cemeteries — In Flanders Fields, John McCrae's poem, was written here during the 1915 Battle of Ypres, and the Menin Gate in Ieper still sounds the Last Post every evening at eight o'clock as it has almost every night since 1928.

Culture & People

Belgian culture is famously complex — a federal state of three language communities (Dutch-speaking Flanders, French-speaking Wallonia, and German-speaking Eupen), a capital that is officially bilingual, and a political system of such baroque intricacy that the country spent 541 days without a government between 2010 and 2011 while everyday life continued without particular disruption. This linguistic patchwork produces genuine cultural richness: Flemish literature, painting, and architecture draw on a tradition that gave the world Jan van Eyck, Pieter Bruegel, and Peter Paul Rubens; Walloon cultural identity is tied to a French-language literary tradition and an industrial heritage that made the Meuse valley the steel heart of nineteenth-century Europe.

What unites Belgians across the linguistic divide is a shared love of beer, chocolate, and comic strips — not as trivial trivia but as genuine expressions of cultural sophistication. Belgium produces over 1,500 different beers, from Trappist ales brewed by monks in silence to wild-fermented lambics that taste like nothing else on earth. The Belgian tradition of bande dessinée (comic art) has produced Tintin, the Smurfs, and Lucky Luke — beloved worldwide — and Brussels has an entire museum dedicated to this art form. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels house one of the finest collections of Flemish primitives in the world alongside a Magritte Museum that contextualises Belgian Surrealism with scholarly rigour.

Food & Cuisine

Belgian food culture operates at a level of seriousness that matches France and far exceeds its reputation in most English-speaking countries. The moules-frites (mussels and fries) served in every Brussels brasserie seem simple but executed properly — the mussels steamed in white wine with celery, onion, and cream, the fries cooked twice in beef fat until shattering-crisp — they represent one of the great European eating experiences. The Belgian waffle has been grotesquely misrepresented abroad; the real thing comes in two varieties: the Brussels waffle, light and rectangular, eaten with fresh strawberries and cream; and the denser Liège waffle, studded with pearl sugar that caramelises to a glassy coating when cooked.

Chocolate in Belgium is not a sweet but a craft — the tradition of pralines (ganache-filled chocolates) invented by Brussels confectioner Jean Neuhaus in 1912 underpins a chocolate culture that produces names like Neuhaus, Godiva, and Leonidas known worldwide, but it is the small artisan chocolatiers of Bruges and Brussels who will genuinely rearrange your expectations of what chocolate can be. The beer pairing culture that matches specific ales with specific dishes — a gueuze lambic with oysters, a dark Trappist dubbel with aged cheese — is taken as seriously by Belgian sommeliers as wine pairing elsewhere. Carbonnade flamande, beef slowly braised in Trappist beer with thyme and bay, may be the finest use of beer in cookery ever devised.

Top Attractions

  • Grand Place, Brussels — One of the world's most beautiful medieval squares, ringed by ornate gilded guild houses and the Gothic Town Hall, UNESCO-listed and unmissable at night when floodlit.
  • Historic Centre of Bruges — A UNESCO-protected medieval city of canals, belfries, and Flemish Gothic architecture so remarkably preserved it feels like stepping into a Jan van Eyck painting.
  • Gravensteen Castle, Ghent — A fearsome medieval fortress rising from the centre of a living city, housing a museum of torture instruments that simultaneously horrifies and delights.
  • Royal Museums of Fine Arts, Brussels — An extraordinary collection including Flemish primitives, Bruegel, Rubens, and the world's finest dedicated Magritte Museum in a single interconnected complex.
  • Menin Gate, Ieper (Ypres) — The monumental arch bearing the names of 54,896 missing Commonwealth soldiers, where the Last Post has been sounded every evening since 1928.
  • Antwerp Diamond Quarter and Cathedral — The world's largest diamond-trading hub sits beneath the soaring Gothic spire of the Cathedral of Our Lady, which houses four Rubens masterpieces.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Buy a multi-day rail pass (B-Rail Weekend Ticket or Go Pass) for unlimited second-class travel — Belgium's trains are punctual, cheap, and connect every city worth visiting within two hours of Brussels.
  • Most major museums in Brussels are free on the first Wednesday afternoon of each month — plan your cultural itinerary around this if budget matters.
  • In Bruges, book accommodation well in advance for spring and summer weekends — the city is small and genuinely fills up, with prices reflecting its popularity.
  • Try beer at the source: many of Belgium's best Trappist breweries offer visitor centres or abbey tours — Chimay, Orval, and Westmalle are all accessible by train and worth a day trip.
  • Belgian frites are served with mayonnaise, not ketchup — embrace this fact entirely and visit a traditional fritkot (fry shack) for the authentic experience.
  • French and Dutch are the working languages in Wallonia and Flanders respectively; English is widely spoken everywhere, but a greeting in the local language is always appreciated.
  • The Menin Gate ceremony in Ieper (Last Post at 8pm every evening) is free, moving, and should not be missed if you are anywhere near West Flanders.

Visa Overview

Belgium is a Schengen Area member, meaning visitors from EU/EEA countries enter freely. Citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and many other countries can visit visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The ETIAS travel authorisation system is expected to become mandatory for visa-exempt non-EU nationals visiting Schengen countries — check current status before travel. Nationals requiring a Schengen visa should apply well in advance through the Belgian embassy or consulate in their home country.

Getting Around

Belgium's national railway (SNCB/NMBS) is the backbone of the country's transport and connects Brussels with Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Liège, and the coast efficiently and affordably. The Brussels Metro, tram, and bus network covers the capital comprehensively. For the Ardennes, buses and local trains reach major towns but a rental car gives much greater freedom to explore castle valleys and hiking trails. Cycling infrastructure across Flanders is world-class — renting a bicycle in Bruges or Ghent is one of the great European cycling pleasures. The Thalys and Eurostar connect Brussels internationally with Paris, Amsterdam, and London.

Safety Notes

Belgium is generally safe for tourists. Brussels city centre, like all major European capitals, has areas with higher petty crime rates, particularly around Gare du Midi and Molenbeek at night — exercise standard vigilance with bags and phones. Pickpocketing in tourist-heavy areas of Bruges and Brussels is the most common crime affecting visitors. Belgium raised security alert levels following terrorist incidents in 2016, and increased security presence remains visible at major public venues. Emergency services are reliable and police are generally helpful to tourists. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
