Brunei is Southeast Asia's most intriguing and least-visited small nation — a tiny sultanate of extraordinary wealth, deep Islamic faith, and pristine rainforest nestled on the northern coast of Borneo. Despite its diminutive size, covering just over 5,700 square kilometres entirely surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak, Brunei punches far above its weight in terms of spectacle, hospitality, and natural beauty. The country is split into two non-contiguous sections of land, yet the sense of unity and purpose here is unmistakable, shaped by the vision of one of the world's wealthiest and longest-reigning monarchs, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Your first impression of Brunei will likely be the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque rising from the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, its golden dome mirrored in the surrounding artificial lagoon — an image of startling beauty against a backdrop of jungle-covered hills. The capital is small, immaculately maintained, and genuinely safe, with an absence of street food culture that initially seems surprising until you realize that Brunei subsidizes fuel and food to an extraordinary degree, and the water village of Kampong Ayer, home to over 30,000 people living in stilted houses connected by wooden boardwalks, provides one of the most genuinely lived-in cultural experiences you will find anywhere in the region.

What truly sets Brunei apart is the quality and accessibility of its rainforest. The empire declined over the following centuries through a combination of internal succession disputes, Dutch commercial competition, and the aggressive expansion of James Brooke, the British adventurer who became the "White Rajah" of Sarawak in 1841 and progressively carved territory from Brunei's domain. Brunei became a British protectorate in 1888, retaining sovereignty under the Sultan while Britain controlled its foreign affairs. The discovery of oil in 1929 transformed the tiny remaining territory's fortunes overnight, and independence was fully restored in 1984. The current Sultan, who has reigned since 1967, has presided over an era of extraordinary wealth, strict Islamic governance, and political stability that defines Brunei today.

Brunei's culture is deeply shaped by its official national philosophy of Melayu Islam Beraja — Malay Islamic Monarchy — which positions Islamic values, Malay culture, and the absolute authority of the Sultan as the three pillars of national identity. Islam permeates daily life: alcohol is prohibited for Muslims and all public sale is banned, eating pork in public is illegal, and the call to prayer echoes across the capital five times a day. Religious observance during Ramadan is taken seriously, and visitors are expected to dress modestly and behave respectfully near mosques and in conservative areas.

Beneath the surface formality, Bruneians are warm, curious, and proud of their country's prosperity and stability. The Malay cultural traditions of the region — including music, dance, woodcarving, and weaving — are actively preserved through government support. The Yayasan Complex in Bandar Seri Begawan is a monument to Islamic architecture and the sultanate's commitment to cultural expression. Water village life in Kampong Ayer preserves a pre-colonial way of living with remarkable continuity — children travel to school by water taxi and families have lived on the same stilted platforms for generations, even as satellite dishes and motorcycles have arrived alongside older customs.

Bruneian cuisine is a delicious fusion of Malay, Chinese, and indigenous Bornean culinary traditions, all shaped by the country's strict halal requirements. Ambuyat is Brunei's unofficial national dish — a sticky, glutinous paste made from sago starch that has no flavor of its own but is eaten with dipping sauces including a sour fruit condiment called cacah binjai that is sweet, spicy, and addictive. You twirl the ambuyat around a bamboo fork and dip before eating — a communal experience best enjoyed with local friends. Nasi katok, a simple dish of steamed rice, fried chicken, and sambal chili wrapped in brown paper, is the nation's beloved cheap eat available at roadside stalls any time of day or night.

Seafood is superb in Brunei given its coastal location — grilled stingray, prawns, and various reef fish prepared with Malay spices are highlights. The Tamu Kianggeh market in Bandar Seri Begawan is the best place to sample local snacks, fresh produce, and the sweet kuih cakes that are central to Bruneian hospitality. Since alcohol is banned for public sale, the beverage scene revolves around fresh fruit juices, teh tarik (pulled tea), and sugar cane juice.
