About Brunei

Brunei is Southeast Asia's most intriguing and least-visited small nation — a tiny sultanate of extraordinary wealth, deep Islamic faith, and pristine rainforest nestled on the northern coast of Borneo. Despite its diminutive size, covering just over 5,700 square kilometres entirely surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak, Brunei punches far above its weight in terms of spectacle, hospitality, and natural beauty. The country is split into two non-contiguous sections of land, yet the sense of unity and purpose here is unmistakable, shaped by the vision of one of the world's wealthiest and longest-reigning monarchs, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Your first impression of Brunei will likely be the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque rising from the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, its golden dome mirrored in the surrounding artificial lagoon — an image of startling beauty against a backdrop of jungle-covered hills. The capital is small, immaculately maintained, and genuinely safe, with an absence of street food culture that initially seems surprising until you realize that Brunei subsidizes fuel and food to an extraordinary degree, and the water village of Kampong Ayer, home to over 30,000 people living in stilted houses connected by wooden boardwalks, provides one of the most genuinely lived-in cultural experiences you will find anywhere in the region.

What truly sets Brunei apart is the quality and accessibility of its rainforest. More than 70 percent of the country remains forested, and places like Ulu Temburong National Park — reachable by a thrilling longboat journey — offer world-class canopy walks and the eerie, humbling experience of primary rainforest that has never been logged. Proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and pygmy elephants are among the wildlife you might encounter. Brunei is expensive by Southeast Asian standards, but it is small enough to see thoroughly in four or five days, and those days will be memorable.

History & Background

Brunei's history stretches back to at least the 7th century CE when it was a trading polity known to Chinese merchants, and by the 15th and 16th centuries the Bruneian Sultanate had become a major maritime power with influence extending across much of Borneo and the southern Philippines. At its peak, the empire controlled coastal territories from the Sulu Archipelago in the north to Java in the south, with Brunei Town serving as a cosmopolitan port where Chinese, Malay, Javanese, and later European merchants traded. The arrival of Ferdinand Magellan's fleet in 1521 provided one of the first detailed Western accounts of Brunei's splendor and sophistication.

The empire declined over the following centuries through a combination of internal succession disputes, Dutch commercial competition, and the aggressive expansion of James Brooke, the British adventurer who became the "White Rajah" of Sarawak in 1841 and progressively carved territory from Brunei's domain. Brunei became a British protectorate in 1888, retaining sovereignty under the Sultan while Britain controlled its foreign affairs. The discovery of oil in 1929 transformed the tiny remaining territory's fortunes overnight, and independence was fully restored in 1984. The current Sultan, who has reigned since 1967, has presided over an era of extraordinary wealth, strict Islamic governance, and political stability that defines Brunei today.

Culture & People

Brunei's culture is deeply shaped by its official national philosophy of Melayu Islam Beraja — Malay Islamic Monarchy — which positions Islamic values, Malay culture, and the absolute authority of the Sultan as the three pillars of national identity. Islam permeates daily life: alcohol is prohibited for Muslims and all public sale is banned, eating pork in public is illegal, and the call to prayer echoes across the capital five times a day. Religious observance during Ramadan is taken seriously, and visitors are expected to dress modestly and behave respectfully near mosques and in conservative areas.

Beneath the surface formality, Bruneians are warm, curious, and proud of their country's prosperity and stability. The Malay cultural traditions of the region — including music, dance, woodcarving, and weaving — are actively preserved through government support. The Yayasan Complex in Bandar Seri Begawan is a monument to Islamic architecture and the sultanate's commitment to cultural expression. Water village life in Kampong Ayer preserves a pre-colonial way of living with remarkable continuity — children travel to school by water taxi and families have lived on the same stilted platforms for generations, even as satellite dishes and motorcycles have arrived alongside older customs.

Food & Cuisine

Bruneian cuisine is a delicious fusion of Malay, Chinese, and indigenous Bornean culinary traditions, all shaped by the country's strict halal requirements. Ambuyat is Brunei's unofficial national dish — a sticky, glutinous paste made from sago starch that has no flavor of its own but is eaten with dipping sauces including a sour fruit condiment called cacah binjai that is sweet, spicy, and addictive. You twirl the ambuyat around a bamboo fork and dip before eating — a communal experience best enjoyed with local friends. Nasi katok, a simple dish of steamed rice, fried chicken, and sambal chili wrapped in brown paper, is the nation's beloved cheap eat available at roadside stalls any time of day or night.

Seafood is superb in Brunei given its coastal location — grilled stingray, prawns, and various reef fish prepared with Malay spices are highlights. The Tamu Kianggeh market in Bandar Seri Begawan is the best place to sample local snacks, fresh produce, and the sweet kuih cakes that are central to Bruneian hospitality. Since alcohol is banned for public sale, the beverage scene revolves around fresh fruit juices, teh tarik (pulled tea), and sugar cane juice. Non-Muslim visitors can bring a limited amount of alcohol for personal consumption, and diplomatic hotels sometimes serve it privately. The food court at Times Square Shopping Centre is a practical and popular spot for affordable and diverse halal meals.

Top Attractions

  • Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque — Brunei's most iconic landmark, a masterpiece of Islamic architecture completed in 1958 with a pure gold dome, Italian marble floors, and a stunning lagoon reflection.
  • Kampong Ayer — The world's largest water village, home to 30,000 residents in stilted houses on the Brunei River, offering a fascinating window into a centuries-old way of life.
  • Ulu Temburong National Park — A pristine rainforest reserve accessed by longboat through jungle rivers, featuring a spectacular canopy walkway rising 50 metres above the forest floor.
  • Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque — Brunei's largest mosque, built to commemorate the Sultan's 25th year of rule, with 29 golden domes and lush surrounding gardens.
  • Royal Regalia Building — A museum housing the ceremonial riches of the Bruneian monarchy including the Sultan's coronation chariot, royal jewelry, and gifts from world leaders.
  • Tasek Merimbun — Brunei's largest natural lake, a peaceful ASEAN Heritage Park with native forest, a traditional island connected by a wooden bridge, and prolific birdlife.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Brunei uses the Brunei dollar (BND), which is interchangeable at par with the Singapore dollar — both are widely accepted.
  • Dress modestly when visiting mosques; cover your shoulders and knees, and women should carry a headscarf. The Omar Ali Saifuddien and Jame'Asr mosques provide robes for visitors.
  • Public alcohol consumption is illegal — enjoy the excellent local juices and teh tarik instead, which are genuinely excellent.
  • Ulu Temburong National Park requires a guided tour; book through any hotel or local operator and arrive early as entry permits are managed.
  • Water taxis are the best way to explore Kampong Ayer — hire a private boat driver who can serve as a guide for a small fee.
  • Uber and Grab operate in Bandar Seri Begawan making getting around very easy and affordable; metered taxis can be scarce.
  • Brunei is very small — with a rental car you can drive across the entire country in under two hours, making day trips extremely manageable.

Visa Overview

Citizens of most countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and EU member states, enjoy visa-free access to Brunei for stays of up to 14 or 30 days depending on nationality. Citizens of some countries may receive 90 days. Entry is typically straightforward at Brunei International Airport. You will need a valid passport with at least six months validity, a return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds. Citizens of certain nationalities require a visa in advance; always verify the latest requirements through the Brunei Immigration Department website before your trip.

Getting Around

Brunei International Airport in Bandar Seri Begawan is the main gateway, served by Royal Brunei Airlines and regional carriers including Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines. Within the capital, Grab is the easiest and most affordable transport option. Car rentals are available and are the best way to explore beyond the city. Buses exist but routes are limited and infrequent. The speedboat ferry to Labuan (Malaysia) and connections to Lawas and Limbang in Sarawak are important for regional travel. To reach Ulu Temburong, you must travel to Bangar by bus and then continue by longboat with a tour operator.

Safety Notes

Brunei is one of the safest countries in Southeast Asia, with very low crime rates and a stable political environment. Visitors should be aware that Brunei operates under both civil and Sharia law — penalties for drug offences are extremely severe, including the death penalty. Public displays of affection between unmarried couples and same-sex relationships are illegal. Alcohol-related laws are strictly enforced in public. Exercise general caution on roads as traffic accidents are the main risk for visitors. Brunei's healthcare system is excellent and free for citizens; visitors should carry comprehensive travel insurance.
