Brunei is Southeast Asia's most intriguing and least-visited small nation — a tiny sultanate of extraordinary wealth, deep Islamic faith, and pristine rainforest nestled on the northern coast of Borneo. Brunei's history stretches back to at least the 7th century CE when it was a trading polity known to Chinese merchants, and by the 15th and 16th centuries the Bruneian Sultanate had become a major maritime power with influence extending across much of Borneo and the southern Philippines. At its peak, the empire controlled coastal territories from the Sulu Archipelago in the north to Java in the south, with Brunei Town serving as a cosmopolitan port where Chinese, Malay, Javanese, and later European merchants traded. The arrival of Ferdinand Magellan's fleet in 1521 provided one of the first detailed Western accounts of Brunei's splendor and sophistication.

The empire declined over the following centuries through a combination of internal succession disputes, Dutch commercial competition, and the aggressive expansion of James Brooke, the British adventurer who became the "White Rajah" of Sarawak in 1841 and progressively carved territory from Brunei's domain. Brunei became a British protectorate in 1888, retaining sovereignty under the Sultan while Britain controlled its foreign affairs. The discovery of oil in 1929 transformed the tiny remaining territory's fortunes overnight, and independence was fully restored in 1984. The Yayasan Complex in Bandar Seri Begawan is a monument to Islamic architecture and the sultanate's commitment to cultural expression. Visa Overview

Citizens of most countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and EU member states, enjoy visa-free access to Brunei for stays of up to 14 or 30 days depending on nationality. Citizens of some countries may receive 90 days. Entry is typically straightforward at Brunei International Airport. You will need a valid passport with at least six months validity, a return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds. Getting Around

Brunei International Airport in Bandar Seri Begawan is the main gateway, served by Royal Brunei Airlines and regional carriers including Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines. Within the capital, Grab is the easiest and most affordable transport option. Car rentals are available and are the best way to explore beyond the city. Buses exist but routes are limited and infrequent. The speedboat ferry to Labuan (Malaysia) and connections to Lawas and Limbang in Sarawak are important for regional travel. To reach Ulu Temburong, you must travel to Bangar by bus and then continue by longboat with a tour operator.

Safety Notes

Brunei is one of the safest countries in Southeast Asia, with very low crime rates and a stable political environment.
