Weather in China

The best time to visit China depends on the regions you plan to explore, but generally spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) offer the most pleasant weather nationwide. During these shoulder seasons, temperatures are mild, the skies tend to be clearer, and the famous parks and heritage sites are adorned with cherry blossoms or golden foliage. These months are popular, so book accommodation and train tickets — especially high-speed rail — well in advance.

Summer (June to August) brings intense heat and humidity to most of central and eastern China, along with peak tourist crowds and the monsoon season that affects the south and Yangtze River valley. Winters are harsh in northern China — Beijing and Xi'an can be bitterly cold from December to February — but this is also when you will encounter fewer tourists at major attractions and charming snow-dusted landscapes. Southern destinations like Yunnan, Guangzhou, and Hainan remain warm year-round and are excellent winter escapes. Avoid traveling during Golden Week holidays (October 1–7 and Chinese New Year) unless you relish extraordinary crowds.
