About Cuba

Cuba is the Caribbean's most complex, captivating, and contradictory destination — a country frozen in certain ways by its revolutionary history yet bursting with music, color, warmth, and a creative energy that overwhelms the senses from the moment you arrive. History & Background

Cuba's history is one of the most dramatic in the Americas. The island was inhabited by the Taíno and Ciboney peoples for thousands of years before Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492 and claimed it for Spain. The indigenous population was devastated by disease and colonial violence within decades, and the Spanish established Cuba as a hub of their Caribbean empire, importing hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans to work the sugar plantations that made Cuba one of the wealthiest colonies in the world. Sugar, slavery, and political yearning for independence defined the 19th century, producing the wars of independence led by figures like José Martí and the eventual Spanish-American War of 1898, which ended Spanish rule but established American economic and political dominance.

The revolution led by Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and the 26th of July Movement overthrew the US-backed Batista dictatorship on January 1, 1959, and fundamentally reoriented the country toward socialism, nationalizing industry, expelling American corporations, and eventually aligning with the Soviet Union. The Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961, the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, and decades of US economic embargo shaped the Cold War era. Son cubano, the African-Spanish musical form that gave birth to salsa, rumba, mambo, and the cha-cha-chá, pulses through Cuban life with an insistence that is almost physiological. Visa Overview

Getting Around
