Weather in Mauritania

Mauritania's climate is predominantly desert, and the timing of your visit has enormous practical and comfort implications. The cool dry season from November to February is the optimal window for travel throughout the country. Temperatures in the desert interior drop to a pleasant 20–28°C during the day and can be genuinely cold at night, making exploration of Chinguetti, Ouadane, and the dune seas around Atar comfortable and even exhilarating. Skies are clear, sand storms are infrequent, and the quality of light for photography is exceptional during these winter months.

From March through May, temperatures begin climbing rapidly, reaching 35–40°C in the desert interior and making extended outdoor exploration uncomfortable. The hot dry season from June to September is extremely challenging in the Saharan north, with temperatures regularly exceeding 45°C and sand storms possible. The coastal city of Nouakchott benefits from Atlantic breezes year-round and is significantly cooler than the interior. The south of the country receives some rainfall during the brief Sahelian rainy season from July to September, making the Senegal River valley greener and certain tracks impassable. For a complete Mauritanian itinerary including both desert and coastal elements, November through January is unequivocally the best time to visit.
