Weather in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's two monsoon seasons mean that the best time to visit depends on which part of the island you plan to explore. The west and south coasts — including Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, and Unawatuna — are best visited from December through March, when the southwest monsoon is over and skies are clear. This is also the optimal season for whale watching off Mirissa, when blue whales pass close to shore between January and April.

The east coast, including Arugam Bay, Trincomalee, and Nilaveli, is at its best from April through September, when the southwest monsoon affects the west while the east is calm and sunny. The hill country and Cultural Triangle are broadly accessible year-round, though April–September offers drier conditions. The shoulder months of September–October and March–April see both coasts transitioning between seasons, offering reasonable conditions with fewer crowds. Yala National Park is best visited from February through July when the dry season concentrates wildlife around water holes.
