Weather in Turkmenistan

The best time to visit Turkmenistan is during spring (April to early June) or autumn (September to October), when temperatures are moderate and the desert landscapes are at their most hospitable. Spring brings brief bursts of color to the Karakum Desert as annual plants bloom, and temperatures average a comfortable 20°C to 28°C (68°F to 82°F), making sightseeing in Ashgabat and the ancient ruins pleasant. Autumn offers similar conditions with the added clarity of dry air that makes desert photography particularly rewarding.

Summer, from June to September, is brutally hot across most of Turkmenistan — temperatures in Ashgabat and the desert regularly exceed 40°C (104°F) and can approach 50°C (122°F) in the Karakum. Visiting the Darvaza Gas Crater in summer is possible but physically demanding; the fire pit experience is considerably more dramatic in cooler nights during spring or autumn. Winter brings cold nights across the desert — temperatures can drop below freezing — and snow occasionally falls in Ashgabat. The Darvaza crater is at its most spectacular in cold, clear winter nights when the glow against the darkness is most vivid, though accessing the site in deep winter requires preparation.
