Coconut in its many forms — fresh drinking coconut, thick cream, shredded flesh, fermented toddy — appears in everything from savory dishes to sweet puddings. Given Tuvalu's isolation and limited agricultural land, imported rice, canned fish, and packaged goods are now everyday staples supplementing traditional foods. Dining options for visitors are extremely limited: a small number of guesthouses serve home-cooked meals, and there are a handful of basic restaurants in Funafuti town. The most memorable food experiences come from accepting invitations to share a community meal with local families.
