History & Background
The kingdoms of the Great Lakes region of East Africa were among the most sophisticated pre-colonial states on the African continent. The Buganda Kingdom, founded around the fourteenth century, developed a complex court structure, a codified legal system, and a maritime tradition on Lake Victoria long before European contact. Arab traders arrived in the early nineteenth century, introducing Islam and initiating the ivory and slave trades that would reshape the region's social order. British explorer John Hanning Speke reached the source of the Nile at what is now Jinja in 1862, triggering a scramble of European interest.
