Western Sahara

Western Sahara is one of the most contested and least-visited territories on Earth — a vast, sun-bleached expanse of desert and rock stretching along the Atlantic coast of northwest Africa. For the traveller willing to look beyond its complex political status, the territory offers dramatic desert landscapes, a fascinating mix of Sahrawi, Moroccan, Berber, and Spanish colonial influences, and a coastline of wild Atlantic beaches that rival anything on the continent. Whether you arrive as part of an overland journey down the west African coast or as a deliberate destination in itself, Western Sahara leaves a powerful impression.

The territory is largely administered by Morocco, which controls the majority of the land including the main cities of Laâyoune (El Aaiún) and Dakhla. These are functioning modern towns with markets, mosques, Spanish-era buildings, and a very different atmosphere to the imperial cities of northern Morocco. Dakhla, sitting on a long lagoon peninsula, has emerged as a world-class destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing — the flat lagoon waters and consistent Atlantic trade winds attract international water sports enthusiasts from around the globe. Beyond the towns, the landscape opens into the genuine Sahara: empty piste roads, fossil-strewn plains, and vast sand dunes with no human presence for hundreds of kilometres.

The Sahrawi people — indigenous inhabitants of the territory — have their own rich culture of nomadic desert tradition, oral poetry, and tea ceremony hospitality that survives both in Morocco-administered territory and in the Tindouf refugee camps in Algeria, where tens of thousands have lived since the conflict of 1975–76. Visiting Western Sahara means engaging with a geopolitical situation that remains unresolved, but it also means encountering desert landscapes of extraordinary solitude and beauty.

The territory of Western Sahara has been home to Berber and later Hassaniya Arabic-speaking peoples for millennia, with the Almoravid dynasty of the 11th century originating from these desert tribes and going on to conquer Morocco and much of the Iberian Peninsula. Spain claimed the territory as a colony in 1884, naming it the Spanish Sahara and establishing administrative centres at Villa Cisneros (now Dakhla) and El Aaiún. For most of the colonial period, Spanish presence was concentrated on the coast, and the interior remained effectively ungoverned Sahrawi territory.

The discovery of significant phosphate reserves at Bou Craa in the 1960s transformed international interest in the territory. As decolonisation swept Africa, Spain agreed to withdraw in 1976, triggering a conflict in which Morocco and Mauritania both claimed the territory. The Polisario Front, backed by Algeria, launched an armed independence struggle on behalf of the Sahrawi people. Mauritania withdrew its claims in 1979; Morocco built the enormous "Berm" — a 2,700-kilometre sand wall — to divide the territory and pushed Polisario forces east. A UN-brokered ceasefire in 1991 froze the conflict, which remains unresolved, making Western Sahara the largest non-self-governing territory in the world.

Sahrawi culture is rooted in the traditions of Hassaniya Arabic-speaking nomadic tribes who have inhabited the western Sahara for centuries, sharing cultural and linguistic ties with Mauritania and the broader Maghreb. The Sahrawi identity is expressed through oral literature — poetry known as tbayratt holds deep cultural significance — elaborate hospitality rituals centred on the three-glass tea ceremony, and a social structure built around tribal lineage and extended family networks. Traditional dress is striking: men wear the darraa, a long flowing robe, while women wear the melhfa, a brightly coloured wrap of Mauritanian influence.

Under Moroccan administration, the culture of Western Sahara blends Sahrawi traditions with Moroccan Amazigh and Arabic influences, creating a hybrid identity most visible in the markets of Laâyoune and Dakhla. Spanish colonial heritage left architectural traces and a lingering Castilian influence in local Spanish-language education and certain cultural practices. In the Tindouf camps in Algeria, Sahrawi-in-exile communities have preserved traditional culture with remarkable determination, including crafts, music, and a literary tradition that is slowly gaining international recognition. The conflict has paradoxically strengthened Sahrawi cultural consciousness and pride.

Food in Western Sahara reflects its position at the intersection of Moroccan, Sahrawi nomadic, and Spanish colonial traditions. In the cities of Laâyoune and Dakhla, you'll find straightforward Moroccan-style restaurants serving tagines, couscous, harira soup, and freshly baked khobz bread alongside small local eateries offering grilled fish and simple meat dishes. Dakhla, positioned on an Atlantic lagoon, has exceptionally fresh seafood — grilled dorade, sea bass, and calamari prepared simply with olive oil and lemon are standard fare in its unpretentious harbour restaurants.

Sahrawi traditional food is nomadic and practical: camel meat is a delicacy for celebrations, served in communal pots alongside rice or couscous. Dried fish, dates, and camel milk have sustained desert travellers for centuries and still appear at traditional gatherings. The three-glass tea ceremony — where three rounds of sweet mint tea are poured from height to create froth, each glass progressively sweeter — is the most important social ritual in Sahrawi culture and the appropriate way to begin any meaningful conversation or negotiation. Spanish-era influence persists in the availability of good coffee and a handful of tapas-style establishments in the larger towns.
