Weather in Zambia

The best time to visit Zambia for wildlife and safari experiences is the dry season from May through October. As water sources recede and vegetation thins out, animals concentrate around the remaining rivers, waterholes, and floodplains in extraordinary densities. Game viewing in South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, and Kafue is outstanding from July through October, when the bush is at its most open and temperatures — though hot, reaching 30–35°C by October — are manageable. The South Luangwa Carnivore Programme makes this one of the best parks in Africa for leopard and lion sightings. Walking safaris in the Luangwa Valley are at their most rewarding during these months, with guides able to track animals through dry grass and leaf litter.

Victoria Falls is magnificent year-round, but the timing of your visit affects the experience considerably. The maximum flow occurs from February through May, when the falls are at full flood and the spray creates a permanent rainbow-filled curtain of white water visible from 50 kilometres away — extraordinary in scale but visibility into the chasm is limited. From August through October the water level drops, allowing you to see the full rock face, swim in Devil's Pool on the Zambian side, and engage in the full range of adventure activities including white-water rafting on the Zambezi. The wet season from November through April transforms the country into a lush green paradise — birdwatching is superb, safari prices drop significantly, and the bush comes alive with newborn animals — but some remote camps close and roads can become impassable.
